Persepolis Assignment

IRAN SURVEY:  Do this First!

1.    When you think of Iran, what are first images or impressions that come to mind?

2.  What do you think daily life is like for the average Iranian citizen?  If you are not sure, go ahead and speculate anyway.

3.  What perceptions do you think the average Iranian citizen has of the United States?  What might influence that            perception?

4.  How do you think people in Iran view United States (American) culture (i.e. television, music, movies, style of dress, etc.)

5.  How similar do you think you are to the average Iranian Citizen?  Please circle below:

2nd, Read the Graphic Novel Persepolis

3rd, After you finish reading Book I, answer the questions below.  You can choose which two of the four questions below you wish you address (perhaps you want to answer fewer questions but offer more in-depth answers).  Please type your responses using standard MLA formatting and thoughtful editing (length: ~2 pages).

4th, Reflection Questions:

1.
After reading Persepolis Book I, in what ways have your perceptions about Iran and its citizens changed from earlier this semester when you took the survey?

2.   If we were using the lens of ethnocentric intercultural communication and ethnorelative intercultural communication, can you make the argument that Iran moved from the latter to the former?  Why or why not?

3.   What items does Marjane’s parents smuggle into Iran for her after their trip abroad?  What did it represent to her?  Describe some other ways in which Marjane and her family try to resist the new regime.  Why do you think they continue to take those chances?  Why do you think people seek to keep their regular routines even in dangerous times?

4.   How does this book add to your understanding of intercultural communication?  Be certain to address the content of this book specifically.
