-TED/Live Speaker Evaluation Assignment-

Link: TED.COM Get Started!!

You must do 5 TED Evaluations and 1 Live Speaker Evaluation. In place of a live speaker, you could do 2 TED evaluations instead.

Purpose: the purpose of the assignment is to expose you to a variety of different speaking styles in order to help you build your own speaking style repertoire.  Critical observation of public address helps you identify what strategies work well and what you should avoid when you are in the position of being a public speaker.

Speech you observe must be longer than 13 MINUTES IN LENGTH.

3 Points: Evaluation is typed; well-edited; Thorough and thoughtful answers; approximate length is 1-2 pages with one-inch margins and 12-point font

2 Points: Evaluation is not typed; or lacking proper editing or page formatting; or a bit short in content

0-1 Points: Effort not apparent; bare minimum not met for college level work

Please answer these questions in your evaluation:

Name of Speaker:________
Length (over 13 min): ________
Title of TED Talk (or LIVE SPEAKER): _____

1. What type of speech is this?  Informative? Persuasive? Ceremonial?

2. What is the purpose of this Speech?

3.  Assess the following proofs?

4. ETHOS

Assess the speaker’s ethos.  Do you perceive them to be credible?  Why, or why not?

5. LOGOS

Asses the speaker’s logos.  Is the speech logically organized?  Do the arguments (ideas) presented seem to make sense to you?  Are there transitions between main points?

6. PATHOS

Assess the pathos (emotional appeal).  Emotional appeals have less to do with solid arguments and more to do with human connection (i.e. stories, visuals that pull on the heart strings; passionate use of language, etc).

7. DELIVERY SKILLS: Assess the following elements of public speaking:

Eye contact (as best you can without being in the room)

Volume

Voice (rate, tone, pitch)

Vocal pauses (those nasty ums, ands, ahs and the worst offender “likes”)

Language use

Hand gestures

Visual aids

8.  OVERALL CRITIQUE:

Did you like the speech?  Why, or why not?

What did you learn from watching this speaker?

How will you utilize what you learned in your everyday life?

Will you adopt any strategies you observed the speaker using during their speech?
